What ties people together is NEED, they know they'd have no chance of surviving if they were alone, they share roles, duties, creativity, freedom, responsbility, life, they know there is no other way if they want to survive...
They stick together because they are alike, they all share the lonliness of their exsistence, the pain of being human, but they also stick together because they compliment each other...they are curious and in a neverending quest for fullfillment...and possibilities beyond themselves...
They stick together because they have a basic need to belong, we have a collective identity as much as we have a personal one, we make sense of ourselves and the world through sharing ourselves with others and if we don't make sense we disintegrate.
The reason why america is so "individualistic" is not because of lack of communication but because americans have a fundamental, almost anal need for control and power so that they can decide who fits where and make sure they keep it that way. There are so many cities built on imaginary boundaries that separate the rich from the poor, the gay from the straight, the white from the black, the natives from the imigrants, etc etc., the perfect status quo don't you think? It's safe, it's predictable, it gives them control, it makes sense...
