"In Paris we wandered from café to café, we went where our steps and our inclinations led us. We had to make due with very little money. I still wonder how we managed. We did dérives in Paris in an extremely limited zone. We discovered routes to go from one place to another that were more like detours. [...] For me, Paris at length remained a perimeter enclosed by Montparnasse, Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Rue de la Huchette. EVERY TIME WE WENT OUT IT WAS AN ADVENTURE. [...] You discover certain places in the city and you start to appreciate them because they treat you nicely in a bar or because you suddenly feel better. This has a relationship with the sensation you feel for one place rather than another. If you set off on a dérive in the right frame of mind, you will certainly wind up in the right place".
