We walked and talked, because they rhyme. They’re grouped in countless love songs together, and that’s what we were, in love. We necked by the fountain, and then went camping in the mountains, because it was the only thing that rhymed.

We did all the things our favorite songs said to do. We danced in the moonlight. We called just to say I love you. I wore blue suede shoes and she wore a raspberry beret. She took my breath away, and all I needed was the air that I breathed, and to love her.

I bought us two tickets to paradise—we vacationed in Kokomo. Whenever I was near she heard a symphony. She fell to pieces each time she saw me. And I loved her, eight days a week, and it was strawberry fields forever.

Whenever a song by one of our favorite artists appeared on a commercial, we would act it out. Bump into each other’s cart at the grocery store, or simply kiss and hold each other in the middle of the street, wearing jeans. We re-enacted the Folger’s Choice commercials, as well as all the other commercials where people fell in love, over coffee, over pizza, over cola, because the other had a certain car, deodorant, or clothing label.

From there it escalated. We started calling advertisement jingles “our song.” Every product began to turn us on. We couldn’t go shopping without getting aroused. We went on hot dates to the grocery store.

“Would you like some coffee?” she would ask.

“Desperately,” I would tell her.

We started sneaking kisses in vacant aisles, then writing dirty notes to each other on the frosted glass of the frozen foods section. Everything was constant titillation, constant teasing. We spent so much time there, in such a heat, that I used to flip through coupon books at work just to get excited. I made her live recordings of Save-On Foods and put them on a CD for her, and we made love to spills in aisle seven and price checks in between the Muzak.
