Shhh,don't tell anyome, it's a surprise!
That's what my friend M, said when he told me about his plans to propose to my friend, L some weeks ago. They had been dating for 2 and a half years.
My eyes glowed.
M had come up with a fabulous plan. We would plan a singles group event to watch the movie Lincoln. And while L would think it was just another random get-together with the singles, he was going to rent a movie theater so that only our group would be exclusively present. We would watch the previews of other movies and when the main feature presentation would pop up, instead of the movie Lincoln, a slide show of pictures during their dating time would play with a final powerful question: Will you marry me?
We had all been waiting anxiously for that Saturday morning, but most of all, my friend M. I also could not hold the secret for too long and had to tell my brother, whom I made him promise, to not tell anyone, because only the singles group knew about this. It was too much to hold in, too exciting of an event to not shout it out. So cool,so sweet.
All of us, the singles group, their parents and families came in as planned,at around 10 AM that morning. We came 15 minutes early so that she would not suspect as to why we were not buying movie tickets at the customer service desk, which by the way, knew about the event for about a month. We got ready, turned the lights off, way darker than usual so she would not be able to see her family members sitting all the way at the end of the movie theater.
M, on the other hand, pretended he bought fake movie tickets when walking in with L and our friend W. They sat down while we were trying to hide our excitement, making jokes and being a little louder than usual when the previews were being played. Then, the feature presentation came in playing a ukulele song with a cute couple. When she saw it, her first reaction was: Wow, what a cute couple.....wait...that's us!
With every picture coming down the screen, she rolled tears of joy. I saw her crying ,while sitting one row down and started crying as well.
The rest of his words were blurry to me, what he said, how he said it, because I had to focus on taking as many pictures of that moment as possible and felt excitingly nervous being part of such a special day, such special memories. But her facial expression was priceless: total amazement, especially when the beautiful ring slipped on her finger.
The whole movie theater was talking about the event. They even had it posted on the movie title: She said Yes!!!
Later on, some of our friends had prepared and hosted an engagement party for them with a beautiful Chinese theme and decorations as Chinese culture is very dear to L, tho she is not Chinese. And more tears of joy, love and appreciation were shared that day.
Love is in the air. It's Christmas time! What wonders await next!
