4th International Summer University (ISU)

From June 12 to July 09, 2004, the University of Kassel will offer
its 4th International Summer University (ISU), the motto of which is
Facing the Challenges of the 21st Century: Interdisciplinary
Approaches to Mediating Sustainability.
This summer university is part of the Hessen International Summer
University Program (ISU) a joint project of universities and
universities of applied science in the state of Hessen which is
supported by the Hessen State Ministry of Higher Education, Research
and the Arts.

The ISU offers:

An academic study program consisting of five modules: Politics &
Economics, Architecture, Ecological Agriculture ,Organic Farming,
Earthquake Engineering, and Erlebte
Landeskunde (Interactive German Studies),
Intensive German Language Courses at the levels A1 (beginning), B1
(intermediate), and C1 (advanced) of the European Language Portfolio
Scale,
An attractive cultural program (excursions, for example to Weimar
and Frankfurt, sight-seeing tours in Kassel, guest lectures and
social events,
Accommodation in German host families (carefully selected by ISU),
Intercultural student life on campus (interaction with German as
well as other international students will be possible since our
semester will not end before mid July) and
ECTS-credits (European Credit Transfer System)

The fee of 1200 Euro includes room and board (two meals a day), the
tuition for modules and German language classes as well as the costs
for excursions and social events.

liberale. AIPES eshte ne menyre te vecante goxha joshese pasi behet
ne Prage qe eshte me te vertete nje qytet i magjishem. Pedagoget
jane shume te mire dhe shpesh ne shkolle vijne njerez te famshem.
Une njoh disa persona qe kane bere kete shkolle dhe me kane
percjelle mbresa shume te mira. Per IIPES nuk di shume por
gjithesesi programi ngjan shume terheqes, plus qe behet ne Greqi ne
nje vend ku do behet kokrra e qejfit. Prandaj dua tjua rekomandoj

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL, OPOLE (Poland), BERLIN and BRUSSELS
This program was created in 1999 by an alumnus of the American
European Summer Academy. This year it should again take place in
three different locations, as you will see from the attached
document. The theme treated throughout the course is "European
integration and EU enlargement – European security".

At the moment we are still negotiating with our Polish partners and
cannot give you very detailed information.

The Polish organizers are the European House at the Foundation for
Silesia Development (Dom Europejski w Opolu) and they will be
recruiting the candidates from Central and Eastern Europe whilst our
Centre international de formation européenne those from the EU
member states. We are aiming for a group of 25 participants who
should be students in their second or third year university studies
or young professionals

ORAL EXAMINATION (non compulsory) The successful passing of the oral
examination will be awarded with the "American
European Summer Academy" Certificate. Other Students will receive a
simple certificate of participation.
LEISURE TIME
Schloss Hofen is located in the beautiful mountains of Vorarlberg
(Austria) fifteen minutes walk away from Lake Constanz.
Excursions and mountain hiking, swimming and access to a private
beach on Lake Constance, barbecues on the beach, boat trips to
Austria, Switzerland and Germany are organized by the staff for the
students of the Summer Academy. There are also some bicycles
on loan at the castle, tennis courts nearby (special rates for
Summer academy students) and the famous Opera Festival of Bregenz
(special rates)

East European Studies Grant Opportunities

The East European Studies (EES) Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center would like
to bring your attention to the Junior Scholars' Training Seminar. Please pass
this announcement on to those who are eligible and might be interested in
applying.


JUNIOR SCHOLARS' TRAINING SEMINAR (JSTS)

The deadline for receipt of this year's JSTS applications and supporting
materials is April 15, 2004. Applicants will be notified approximately six
weeks later.

Background Information
EES and the Committee on Eastern European Studies of the American Council of
Learned Societies are soliciting applications for the sixteenth annual training
seminar for junior scholars in East European studies, to be held outside of
Washington, DC on the Chesapeake Bay August 13-16, 2004. All
domestic transportation, accommodation and meal costs will be covered by the
sponsors.

Eligibility
These scholarships are available to American citizens or permanent residents.
Graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program at an American university who
have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. except the dissertation, and
scholars who received their Ph.D.s within the past year in any field of East
European or Baltic studies (Russia, the Soviet successor states, and Germany are
excluded) are eligible to apply.

All projects should aim to highlight their potential policy relevance.
Disciplines represented at JSTS 2003 included: anthropology; history; political
science; and, Slavic languages and literatures.

Program Description
JSTS successfully combines formal and informal meetings to promote a variety of
intellectual exchanges. Past activities have included:
- individual presentations;
- constructive feedback and question and answer sessions;
- one-on-one meetings for Junior Scholars with Senior Scholars;
- advice regarding publishing;
- discussions about the state of the profession and obtaining employment in the
field;
- various social activities, including the crab-fest and the annual volleyball
challenge.

Additional Requirements
Successful applicants are expected to submit a five-page paper no later than
July 1 on the sources and methodology of their report and the wider significance
of their work. (In other words, what was researched, how it was researched, and
what it all means.) This paper will serve as the basis for discussion at the
seminar.

To apply for the Junior Scholars' Training Seminar (JSTS), the applicant must
submit the following:
- a completed application form (please download from our website at
www.wilsoncenter.org/ees);
- a curriculum vitae (which must include social security number,
institution where degree is expected or was received, title of doctoral
dissertation and name and department of doctoral advisor);
- a single page, single-spaced statement of the work you wish to discuss -
either the dissertation or another project;
- one letter of recommendation from Ph.D. advisor.
