Celebrations in Podgorica
PODGORICA -- According to preliminary results, 55.4 per cent of participating voters supported Montenegrin independence.
The Republic Election Commission President Frantiek Lipka said that they have yet to tally votes from 45 polling stations, which represent 25,000 votes. The Commission reported this morning that according to the tallies thus far, 55.4 per cent of participating voters voted yes for Montenegrin independence and 44.6 per cent were opposed to independence.
Lipka said that 86.3 per cent of registered voters participating in the referendum and that 99.13 per cent of the votes were cast correctly and without incident.
Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Šukanovię and the CEMI non-government organisation stated late last night that 55.5 per cent of Montenegrin voters supported independence. Šukanovię said that with the vote, Montenegros citizens have restored Montenegrin independence and sovereignty.
I thank everyone for their patience, because as serious people, we did not wish to rush anything. After tallying 99 per cent of the votes, we have 55.5 per cent of the votes for the support of Montenegrin independence. Šukanovię said, adding that these figures show that about 45,000 more people voted for independence than for the preservation of the union with Serbia.
We have our country and I am sure that we will never lose it again. Šukanovię said. He added that independence is in the best interest of Montenegros European future and he also congratulated Serbia on its newfound independence.
This is the most important day in the recent history of Montenegro. he said.
Šukanovię thanked the entire Montenegrin, democratic public, as well as those who voted for the preservation of the union, who with their participation, showed that Montenegro is a democratically and politically mature state. He also thanked the European Union for its help in organising and implementing the referendum. He called on Montenegros citizens to graciously celebrate this great victory so that no one will feel as if they have lost something.
Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovię said that he does not expect any level of disorder or conflicts between the supporters of the two opposing blocs.
Asked what Montenegros first step will be once the referendums results are final, Vujanovię said that Podgorica will firstly have to establish contact with Brussels and Belgrade.
Our infrastructure is prepared for independence. We expect that the process of Montenegros European integration will continue and we wish to join the Partnership for Peace. Montenegro will no longer be bothered with the calling off of stabilisation and association discussions with the European Union because of the fact that general Ratko Mladic has not yet been extradited. Vujanovię said.
