During his short life, Tupac Amaru Shakur (a.k.a.2pac) became living symbol of his generation's frustration and rage. As a rapper, his songs often detailed the misery, desperation, and violence of ghetto life. As a personality, he easily embodied the false bravado and urban nonchalance that reflected a tough, unforgiving upbringing. As an actor, he was good-looking and charismatic, and his appearances in five feature films suggested he had great potential on the big screen in a variety of personas. But Shakur never had time to realize any of these embodiments. On September 7, 1996, he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on a neon-lit gambling strip in downtown Las Vegas. He died six days later as a result of those wounds. He was twenty-five. The case is still unsolved.........

The son of political activists Afeni Shakur and Billy Garland, Tupac Shakur grew up a troubled and precocious child. His home life was unstable, and he ended up moving from one inner-city community to another. Because of that instability, Shakur sought to assert himself through gangs. By the time he was twenty, Shakur had been arrested eight times, even serving eight months in prison after being convicted of sexual abuse. In addition, he was the subject of two wrongful-death lawsuits, one involving a six-year-old boy who was killed after getting caught in gang-war crossfire between Shakur's gang and a rival group.

In the late eighties, Shakur teamed up with Humpty-Hump (a.k.a. Eddie Humphrey, a.k.a. Gregory "Shock-G" Jacobs) and other Oakland-based rappers to create Digital Underground, a band intent on massive bass beats and frenetic, Parliament-Funkadelic-style rhythms. In 1990, the group released its debut and best album, Sex Packets, a pulsating testament to the boogie power of hip-hop, featuring two classic tracks, "Humpty Dance" and "Doowutchyalike." After an EP of re-mixes in 1991, D.U. released Sons of the P and, the following year, The Body-Hat Syndrome, all on Tommy Boy Records.......................continue.......................!

In 1992, Shakur entered a most fruitful five-year period. He broke free of D.U. and made his solo debut, 2Pacalypse Now, a gangsta rap document that put him in the notorious, high-speed lane to stardom. That same year he starred in Juice, an acclaimed low-budget film about gangs which saw some Hollywood success. In 1993, he recorded and released Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., an album that found Shakur crossing over to the pop charts. Unfortunately, he also found himself on police blotters, when allegations of a violent attack on an off-duty police officer and sexual misconduct arose. The same year, Shakur played a single father and Janet Jackson's love interest in the John Singleton film Poetic Justice.

In November of 1994, he was shot five times during a robbery in which thieves made off with $40,000 worth of his jewelry. Shakur miraculously recovered from his injuries to produce his most impressive artistic accomplishments, including 1995's Me Against the World, which sold two million copies, and the double-CD All Eyez on Me, which sold nearly three million. As his career arc began a steep rise toward fame and fortune, Shakur was shot (most say suspiciously) and killed after watching a Mike Tyson fight with Death Row Records president Marion "Suge" Knight. Though his death was a jolt to his fans and the music community, Shakur himself often said that he expected he'd die by the sword before he reached thirty.........................continue..................................!!!

Following his passing, Shakur's label released an album, The Don Killuminati, under the pseudonym "Makaveli." The cover depicted Shakur nailed to a cross under a crown of thorns, with a map of the country's major gang areas superimposed on it. In January of 1997, Gramercy Pictures released Gridlock'd, a film in which Shakur played the role of a drug addict to mostly good reviews. His final film, Gang Related, is due to be released in 1997, and Death Row is said to have several unreleased recordings in the vaults for potential future release.

The South Jamaica, Queens 26 year old native, 50 cent, is grinding hard to be at the top in his field. His freestyles on mixtapes are more like songs because he adds a hook and an original beat to his music. This has separated him from the average rapper. 50 lays it down so well because he's not a newcomer. Instead he's an established artists that’s confident enough to spit flames and make hot music. 50 is so hot, that DJ’s have taken it upon themselves to release two Best of 50 Cent mix CD’s, before he had even signed to a major label. There is no such thing as not being on point for Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. He's without a question, at the top of his game, being an artist of Multiple Talent..............continue.............!!!

50 hit the scene like an earthquake with “How To Rob An Industry Nigga” and he’s been on a rampage ever since dealing with bootleggers, label backstabbing and other platinum selling artists trying to get at him physically. In 1999 his album Power of the Dollar, was heavily bootlegged and Trackmasters/Columbia never released it. Supposedly Trackmasters weren’t comfortable with him being caught up in the streets and getting shot three days before filming the video for “Thug Love”, with Destiny’s Child his first single. That of course led to the fall out with Columbia and negotiating his release from their grasps. He still showed love and rhymed over a Trackmasters produced remix of “I’m Gonna Be Alright” on J-Lo’s latest album. The beat making squad also worked on 50’s new upcomming LP. 50 recently signed with hip-hop management juggernaut Violator, and has Teamworks Music producing with Sha Money XL holding him down. He’s currently in a bidding war with labels like J, Universal and Jive to release his album Get Rich or Die Trying thru his own imprint, Rotten Apple. 50 has full access and advantage of the streets through mixtapes because that’s his forum because he controls it. He’s been stabbed and shot since being in the public’s eyes and has never snitched on anybody but instead remained in his gangsta state of mind. He has loosened up a bit on the violent mentality and has started coming out with concepts that can interest the world. To put it blunt, 50 Cent can’t be stopped!

After seven years and three albums you'd think you know someone. You'd figure you've been checking his rhymes and diving deep into his flow, and would have some insight into his mind. One would think, but when it comes to Xzibit, one would be dead wrong. That's because on his fourth album MAN VS. MACHINE (Loud/Columbia), the West Coast warrior blows the lid off preconceptions of what an Xzibit release should and can sound like. Featuring production from heavyweights like Ric Rock, Bink, Rockwilder, Erick Sermon, DJ Premier and Dr Dre, who also served as Executive Producer, and boasting cameos from the Golden State Project (aka Ras Kass, Sincere, and Saafir), Snoop Dogg, Dre, Anthony Hamilton, M.O.P., Nate Dogg, and Eminem, MAN VS. MACHINE is Xzibit's assault ratcheted up several notches. Tough, smart, focused, bass-blessed, funkdafied, and full-out hardcore, MAN VS. MACHINE is not only a side of Xzibit that he's never exposed, it's also the hottest album of his career.

The title is a signal that Xzibit has something new up his sleeve. "MAN VS. MACHINE embodies what I think struggle is, " Xzibit explains. "My personal life and what the industry expects of me and what I want to do. "Machine" seemed the best word because it represents everything I go up against and struggle with, as an artist and a man. There's a tremendous amount of growth on this album, because if you don't show growth you run the risk of losing momentum and after the success of Restless (2000), I didn't want to do that. So this time, I experimented. I have a soul song. A song that uses opera. I just got real personal, because I can't rap about the same shit I did when I was 18. I'm trying to grow with my audience."

The creativity that can rise out of growth and struggle is evident in the way Xzibit has divided the album up into both "Man" and "Machine" elements. The "Man" side gives Xzibit an opportunity to lace fans with hard-hitting beats and close-to-the-bone sentiment. When asked why he waited so long to showcase this more introspective aspect of his persona, Xzibit is honest: "Because it was important for me to hold back until I had the audience's attention. There's nothing worse then saying something important and not being heard. After the success I've enjoyed I knew that I had the support to give fans a glimpse of what makes me tick."

Xzibit's growth is heard on tracks like the soul drenched "Gambler" (produced by Bink), featuring vocalist Anthony Hamilton and the emotional "Missin' U," produced by Ric Rock and featuring Andre Wilson. "Missin' U" speaks about the death of Xzibit's mother and the choices he had to make. "I was so young when my mother passed and I know my life could have had me on either some destroyed shit or made me stronger. Thank God, it made me stronger."

Another facet of the "Man" side is the rugged "Release Date." Produced by Rockwilder, "Release Date" breaks down the gritty day-to-day realities of a man serving a five year bid in the California prison system. Like "Missing You," "Release Date" was drawn from reality, taking its inspiration from Xzibit's brother who has been incarcerated for ten years. And speaking of "the man," "What A Mess" teams Xzibit up with the legendary D.J. Premier. A perfect blend of Xzibit's rough and ready rhymes and Primo's deep grooves, "What A Mess" is another indication of Xzibit's maturity. "This was the first time I 'd traveled to the East and worked with producers there," Xzibit says. "They embraced me what I was trying to do and it was all lovely since everyone came together and complimented each other."

The "Machine" makes its presence felt on cuts like "Symphony in X Major." Featuring Dre, the track, laughs Xzibit, is "Crazy! It's gonna fuck people up!"

Equally bananas is the uptempo and bouncy "Break Yourself" and "Harder," which gives Xzibit's group Golden State a chance to shine. As one might expect from a Who's Who of Los Angelinos talent "Harder" is pure Cali chaos and seriously off the hook.

After doing time as an unsigned hero of the LA underground, Xzibit got his first taste of mass appeal when, in 1995, he toured with Likwit Crew, an ad hoc group that included Tha Liks, Defari and King Tee. The following year Xzibit signed to Loud Records and released At the Speed of Life which gave folks access to his uncut artistry and mic technique. His sophomore CD 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz followed in '98 while the video for the single "What You See Is What You Get" held the #1 position 6 weeks consecutively on BET's "Rap City," breaking the network's record. Xzibit followed that up with an attention grabbing cameo on Snoop Dogg's "B Please," and the Dr Dre-produced track helped take Xzibit to the next level.

That level was Restless (2000). Yet another project with Dre, the RIAA platinum-certified Restless would become the biggest selling CD of Xzibit's career and the video for the explosive single "X" became a staple on both BET and MTV. Xzibit's singular "slanguage" also caught the ear of his fellow artists and lead to several high profile collaborations with Eminem, De La Soul, Fred Durst, Erick Sermon and Korn's Jonathan Davis.

Xzibit also took his skills to the stage and participated in the hugely successful "Anger Management" and "Up In Smoke" tours. After getting off the road, Xzibit spent time with his son and then focused in on the task at hand: recording MAN VS. MACHINE. With expectations running high, Xzibit made sure his mind and body were prepared for his next move. "I spent time bettering myself. I got on some crazy workout shit, limited my drinking and smoking and dropped 25 pounds. I trained for this album like I was training for a fight. I haven't had this much energy since high school. I feel good."

If Xzibit feels good, he's sounding even better. Armed with a new determination and bolstered by the respect he's earned, Xzibit re-enters the ring packing punches that will make your head nod and your body rock. Xzibit will embark on a sequel to the Anger Management tour next fall with Eminem, Papa Roach, and Ludacris. Asked how he views MAN VS. MACHINE, Xzibit is forthright: "I love this album. I take my music very seriously and to heart."

The average rapper wouldn't be able to grace the pages of Rap Pages, VIBE, Spin, The Source, URB and Stress and go on a national tour months before their major-label debut album is released. Then again, Eminem isn't an average rapper. He's phenomenal.

The impending release of the Slim Shady LP, his first set on Aftermath/Interscope Records, already has underground hip-hop heads fiending for Eminem. Chock full of dazzling lyrical escapades that delve into the mind of a violently warped and vulgar yet extremely talented wordsmith, the 14-cut collection contains some of the most memorable and demented lyrics ever recorded.

For Eminem, his potentially controversial and undoubtedly offensive songs will strike a chord with a multitude of hip-hop loyalists who believe they have little to lose and everything to gain.

"I'm not alone in feeling the way I feel," he says. "I believe that a lot of people can relate to my sh*t--whether white, black, it doesn't matter. Everybody has been through some sh*t, whether it's drastic or not so drastic. Everybody gets to the point of 'I don't give a f**k.'"

Those words are more than just a slogan for the Detroit resident. "I Just Don't Give A F*ck" and "Brain Damage" are the two songs comprising Eminem's initial single from the Slim Shady LP. Each tune is sure to paralyze meek listeners with their relentless lyrical assault. Produced primarily by long-time collaborators FBT Productions, the Slim Shady LP also features beatwork from Aftermath CEO Dr. Dre. The N.W.A. alum handled beats for "My Name Is" (the second single), "Guilty Conscience" and "Role Model."

Dr. Dre was so impressed after hearing Eminem freestyling on a Los Angeles radio station that he put out a manhunt for the Michigan rhymer. Shortly thereafter, Dre signed Eminem to his Aftermath imprint and the two began working together. Thoroughly impressed with Eminem's previously released independent Slim Shady EP, Dre said they would include many of the EP's tracks on the album.

"It was an honor to hear the words out of Dre's mouth that he liked my sh*t," Eminem says. "Growing up, I was one of the biggest fans of N.W.A, from putting on the sunglasses and looking in the mirror and lipsinking to wanting to be Dr. Dre, to be Ice Cube. This is the biggest hip-hop producer ever."

But like many other rappers, Eminem's rise to stardom was far from easy. After being born in Kansas City and traveling back and forth between KC and the Detroit metropolitan area, Eminem and his mother moved into the Eastside of Detroit when he was 12. Switching schools every two to three months made it difficult to make friends, graduate and to stay out of trouble.

Rap, however, became Eminem's solace. Battling schoolmates in the lunchroom brought joy to what was otherwise a painful existence. Although he would later drop out of school and land several minimum-wage-paying, full-time jobs, his musical focus remained constant.

Eminem released his debut album, Infinite, in 1996. Desperate to be embraced by the Motor City's hip-hop scene, Eminem rapped in such a manner that he was accused of sounding like Nas and AZ.

"Infinite was me trying to figure out how I wanted my rap style to be, how I wanted to sound on the mic and present myself," he recalls. "It was a growing stage. I felt like Infinite was like a demo that just got pressed up."

After being thoroughly disappointed and hurt by the response Infinite received, Eminem began working on what would later become the Slim Shady EP -- a project he made for himself. Featuring several scathing lines about local music industry personalities as well as devious rants about life in general, the set quickly caught the ear of hip-hop's difficult-to-please underground.

"I had nothing to lose, but something to gain," Eminem says of that point in his life. "If I made an album for me and it was to my satisfaction, then I succeeded. If I didn't, then my producers were going to give up on the whole rap thing we were doing. I made some sh*t that I wanted to hear. The Slim Shady EP, I lashed out on everybody who talked sh*t about me."

By presenting himself as himself, Eminem and his career took off. Soon after giving the Rap Coalition's Wendy Day a copy of the Infinite album at a chance meeting, she helped the aspiring lyrical gymnast secure a spot at the Coalition’s 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, where he won second place in the freestyle competition. During the trip, Eminem and his manager, Paul Rosenberg, gave a few people from Interscope Records his demo and he made his major radio debut on the world famous Wake Up Show with Sway and Tech. Realizing that this was the opportunity of his lifetime, Eminem delivered a furious medley of lyrics that wowed his hosts and radio audience alike.

"I felt like it's my time to shine," Eminem says of that performance. "I have to rip this. At that time, I felt that it was a life or death situation."

Eminem would soon record the underground classic "5 Star Generals." This record helped establish him in Japan, New York and Los Angeles. It also helped him earn a spot on the inaugural Lyricist Lounge tour, which took him to stages from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.

Set to take the hip-hop world by storm with his unique lyrical approach and punishing production, Eminem and his Slim Shady LP are sure to have listeners captivated.

"I do say things that I think will shock people," he says. "But I don't do things to shock people. I'm not trying to be the next Tupac, but I don't know how long I'm going to be on this planet. So while I'm here, I might as well make the most of it."
